02 / ANALYSIS

Launched in February 2023 as a $10/member add-on that any plan tier could buy, Notion AI has since walked steadily upmarket. The reversal is dated precisely: on May 13, 2025 the add-on was pulled from Free and Plus and folded exclusively into Business ($20/member) and Enterprise, so the cheapest route to full Notion AI rose from roughly $18 (Plus plus add-on) to $20/seat Business, Free and Plus lost AI for good, and cancelled legacy add-ons can't resubscribe. New surfaces then arrived already metered: AI image generation (March 2026) shipped Business-only with hard caps of 10 per 24h and 30 per rolling 30 days, and Custom Agents (May 2026) moved from free beta to consumption credits at $10/1,000 credits with no rollover (~$0.03–0.33 per run). July 2026 brought a burst the other way — orchestrating external agents (Claude, Cursor), a broader model lineup, Windows CLI support, and a Notion Agents iOS app. The net effect is that cheap-tier access to real Notion AI is gone; assume Business at minimum, and treat agentic workflows as a variable monthly cost that climbs with run frequency and data volume — a floor, not a fixed line.
