02 / ANALYSIS

Two overlapping stories run through v0: the v0 product, which has tightened, and the Vercel platform beneath it, which has mostly loosened. On the product, the pivotal move was May 2025's switch to token-based credit metering — billed per input and output token from a monthly pool — after which iterative users watched credits drain far faster than under the old flat model (one reporting 'over $35 in a single day doing what previously cost me $20 for the entire month'). That came right after an April 2025 free-tier cut to ~7 messages/day, which landed silently with no changelog. January 2026 then closed the $20 Premium tier to new users, routing new solo developers to Team at $30/seat. Model access has been jumpy: Claude Fable 5 went live on the AI Gateway in June 2026, was suspended days later when Anthropic disabled it worldwide under a US export-control directive — breaking any app pinned to it — and was restored in early July. The Vercel side of the ledger runs the opposite way across mid-2026: longer function and sandbox durations, higher Blob-store and package-size limits, removed CLI deploy limits, a widening model roster, and billing-timing tweaks that leave totals unchanged. So the infrastructure keeps getting more generous while v0 itself moved from predictable flat pricing to consumption metering that can spike. The cost risk lives in the token meter and in pinned models, not in platform capacity — budget for usage-scaled bills and avoid hard-pinning a single gateway model.
