Sora vs Runway

How Sora and Runway compare on constraint stability — usage limits, pricing, model access and transparency over time.

Constraint stability only — pricing, limits, model availability, transparency. Not a capability comparison.

02 / WHICH CHANGES THE RULES LESS?

Five recorded constraint events for Sora against Runway's one — so this weighs a documented pattern against a single data point. Sora's five show repeated, openly-stated tightening under cost pressure: it launched on 2024-12-09 with the EU and UK explicitly excluded (paying Plus/Pro subscribers there had zero access for about 81 days until the block lifted on 2025-02-28), added paid credit packs on 2025-10-30 ($4 per 10 extra generations, an economics the record calls 'completely unsustainable'), cut the free daily allowance from around 30 to about 6 generations on 2025-11-01 (an ~80% reduction blamed on melting GPUs), and on 2025-10-03 tightened content by blocking real-person likenesses by default behind opt-in Cameo. Runway's lone logged event is the 2026-06-01 closure of its Unlimited plan: Explore Mode — credit-free slow-lane generation — disappears as users move to Max, which grants 9,500 credits/month (about 4x Unlimited's 2,250) but no credit-free drafting, and a user reports Runway charges credits even for failed generations. One event can't establish volatility or stability — Runway's history here is simply thin. What's certain is that Sora has demonstrably and quickly gutted its free tier, while Runway's single change swaps unlimited-but-slow drafting for a larger metered bucket. Neither is ideal for predictable free iteration, but Sora's free path has been actively hollowed out and Runway's shift at least raises the ceiling — which makes Runway the marginally safer paid choice on this limited evidence.
