02 / WHICH CHANGES THE RULES LESS?
Two avatar-video platforms reached the same credit model, but HeyGen got there far more harshly. Its record is the punishing one: on 2026-01-01 the $39/seat Team plan closed to new purchase, lifting a new team's floor from roughly $78 to $189/mo via the $149 Business tier plus $20/seat, with grandfathering described as fragile; free API onboarding credits vanished on 2026-02-01 (pay-as-you-go, $5 minimum); and on 2026-05-15 legacy Unlimited plans were decommissioned with migration made explicitly irreversible — 'switching/cancelling is permanent — no return.' One user watched 200 Creator credits disappear in a single Avatar IV session. Synthesia reached the same destination more gently. Its Personal Plan went into maintenance mode back on 2024-01-01 and API access was gated to the $89 Creator tier in mid-2024, so its restrictive moves are older; its 2025-08-18 minutes-to-credits switch was rated neutral — nominal minutes unchanged even as shared credits drain faster across dubbing, bulk and API — and on 2025-09-01 it actually cut annual prices (Starter −38% to $18/mo, Creator −28% to $64/mo), a loosening HeyGen's timeline can't match, though HeyGen does offer unlimited no-cost audio dubbing from 2026-05-04. For a budget-conscious buyer Synthesia is the calmer choice: its disruptions are largely historical and its recent motion runs downward on price with minutes held steady. HeyGen rewards users who need its newer capabilities but should brace for steeper team costs and, above all, irreversible plan migrations — a structural exposure Synthesia's record doesn't carry to the same degree.
